Mernda Martial Arts

Training in Freestyle Combat, a self defence system developed by Mick Nicholls and founded in 1979.

Freestyle Combat is a complete and practical system of self defence & self development which was founded in 1979 by the highly respected Australian martial artist, Mick Nicholls. This dynamic system combines a variety of concepts, techniques and principals from some of the world’s most practical martial art systems.

Our Primary Goal is to develop confidence, tolerance, discipline, a positive demeanor and mind set, self esteem and self control, which are all important virtues for self protection.

Freestyle is for those interested in what works, rather than what looks pretty. We have no interest in competition, as we concentrate on developing our member’s personal defensive skills.

Freestyle is a family oriented self defence system designed for both sexes and all ages. Our classes are taught in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere and designed for people to learn and have fun in a safe environment.

Freestyle blends together aspects from Boxing, Karate, Filipino Kali (stick work) and Panantuken (as seen in the Jason Bourne movies), Muay Thai Kickboxing, Krav Maga, Worden's Combative's (as trained in the US Special forces) and Jiu Jitsu/Grappling along with traditional values and modern principals.

You are welcome to come down for 2 free classes in order to see if you enjoy the class. Your first class will involve 1 on 1 instruction to ensure you’re not just thrown in the deep end with experienced students.

All classes are run at the Mernda Community & Activity Centre in Mernda Villages. The facilities are air conditioned and heated for year round comfort.

Class times are Monday at 7pm and Saturday at 9am.
Family discounts apply to class fees and we encourage siblings training together, as well as parents training with their children.
